She taught Spanish at Wayne State College in Nebraska for a year before transferring to Viterbo University in La Crosse as a Spanish instructor in 1985. During that time, she completed a Master of Arts in Music Education from DePaul University, Chicago. Her low-key personality, sense of humor and ability to go with the flow drew people to her. Marie never knew two of her brothers: Raymond died of jaundice shortly after birth and Vernon was kicked by a horse when he was seven.
